Instructions for the Fallen

Climb to your feet when the weight pulls you down
Stand yourself straight as the world bends you round
As despair takes your heart, bears it high like a crown
Keep hold of your head to keep you aground.

Mark clearly your path with your tears and a chain
Forge each new link with your hammer and blame
Hold tight to your chest, or risk all that you gain
Never share secrets, be aware you’re insane.

Call back the night, every mare, moon and star
Labour through loss, carry hope in a jar
Drink deep the past, both the near and the far
Know all that you aren’t, will be less than you are.

And when all’s said and done, what you’ve done is your best
Swallow shame, lay your head, close your eyes, take your rest.
